Veppam Movie Online Review - A sense of Deja' vu

Veppam Story:

Veppam is a pace puzzle that demands your absolute undivided interest. Yep, you don’t look away even for a minute, because you’re bound to miss an important facet that will bring in up later in the movie. Let’s take a look at the story, performances, and other aspects of the film through Veppam review….

The story opens in North Chennai slums where two young boys are left lonely as their mother commits suicide as her husband Jothi (Shimmore) is a drunkard who doesn’t care for his family. A noble person Sekhar who resides besides their house takes care of both the brothers and they grow big in a decent way. Sekhar takes care of elder brother Balaji (Muthukumar) and his sibling Karthik (Nani) and makes them study.

Karthik spend most of his time with his close friend Vishnu (Karthik Kumar) who hails from the same locality and maintains a bike workshop. As years pass by Revathy who works at a Xerox shop and also the daughter of Sekhar falls in love with Karthik. Meanwhile Jothi turns as a pimp and works with drug dealer Ammaji (Jennifer) in the same area.

At one point Vishnu meets Viji (Bindu Madhavi) who is a call girl and falls in love with her. Knowing that Vishnu is in love with Viji, Jothi decides to use him for his drug dealings. He assigns him a task of transporting drugs to Pondicherry and Karthik also joins him in this dealing. Vishnu accepts to take up this deal as he wants to take Viji from that place. But at one point of time Vishnu comes across the truth that it was a plan by Jothi to bump him off and he returns to Chennai. It was on the same night Vishnu gets killed and the guilt falls on Karthik as he accompanied him.

How Vishnu was killed? What are the circumstances that lead to Vishnu’s murder? What was Karthik doing when Vishnu was killed? Is Karthik the real culprit? If not how will he prove that he didn’t kill Vishnu? What is the situation of Viji? You can get the reply for all these questions on the big screen.

Performances:

Nani is completely natural while playing the character of Karthik. He has shown different variations like a brother, lover and also a close friend to Vishnu in the best way possible.

Karthik Kumar has given exceptional performance as Vishnu; he has nailed the character’s slack approach and roughness efficiently. This can be said as his best ever performance.

Nithya Menon performed well on her limits but her character has a limited scope while Bindu Madhavi is the show stealer as she got into the skin of the character of a prostitute.

Muthukumar gives controlled emotion and he gave his best to the role of Balaji. Gautham Menon’s dubbing for him sets the screen on screen on fire. Three cheers to him!

Technicalities:

Debutant director Anjana made sure that this action thriller holds the audiences interest with romance, drama, violence and slick packaging. Her hard work is seen in many scenes. The director has made sure that the scenes leading to climax are attention-grabbing and interesting. Anjana knows her expertise and she comes up with a nice job with her debut film, off course she is from the school of Gautham Menon!

Other departments:

Music by Joshua Sridhar is melodious and soothing. The songs Mazhai Varum Ariguri and Oru Devadhai are good to the ears and blend with the storyline. Joshua’s music is said to be the highlight of the film.

Dialogues in the film are muted most of the time and looks like Anjana has not shown much attention towards them.

Cinematography by Om Prakash is very smooth and certainly he created magic with his visuals.

Editing by Anthony is good and crisp editing adds pace to the script but however a bit of trimming at some parts of the film will keep the audiences glued to the screens.

Analysis:

It is a movie set in the backdrop of North Madras milieu reminds some of movies like Pattiyal, Pudhupettai and many more. The story is confusing and added to this the audiences get irritated with too many mutes. The film is badly butchered by the censors. The first half has nothing to offer except some breezy moments while the second half competes with the first half by offering nothing as story is predictable but few scenes keeps you engaging. Though the suspense is maintained there is a lack of clarity that deviates the audience’s interest.

Now a big question is that how many films set in North Madras milieu on gangsters, pimps, whores, drug running cartels, friendship, betrayal and murder will still continue to come?

Quick take: A sense of Deja' vu
