In an interview with Reuters, the actress - who plays a country singer recovering from an alcohol addiction in the film - admitted that her Iron Man co-star's past problems with substance abuse served as an inspiration as she tried to better understand the role.
"I just couldn't understand how you could be so drunk that you could wreck people's lives and then wake up the next day and pretend everything was fine. I struggled with that," she explained.
"I asked Robert, 'How does this work?' He was really articulate about addiction and the psychology behind it. He really helped me a lot."
Country Strong opens January 7 in the US and on March 25 in the UK.
